Why Do All Pirate Games Feel Like the Same Loot Run? A Game Designer’s Take on Depth vs. Repetition

Why Do All Pirate Games Feel Like the Same Loot Run?

Let me ask you something: ever play a pirate game where you actually felt like a pirate? Not just someone swinging a sword in a sea of loot crates, but someone shaped by history, culture, and consequence?

I haven’t either.

As a London-based game developer who’s worked on three major mobile titles—two of them with nautical themes—I’ve seen the pattern repeat: gold chests, cannon fire, eye patches… and zero soul.

The Myth of ‘Pirate Energy’

We keep telling players they’re “free to roam,” but freedom without context is just noise. Real pirates weren’t Robin Hood—they were mercenaries, criminals, rebels with complex identities tied to colonialism, trade routes, and survival.

Yet in most games? They’re reduced to cartoonish caricatures chasing shiny rewards.

It’s not just lazy design—it’s missed opportunity. We have access to rich archives: logbooks from 18th-century ships, indigenous resistance narratives in the Caribbean, even maritime law systems that governed naval warfare.

But instead of weaving these into gameplay mechanics—say, resource scarcity based on seasonal winds or moral choices during port raids—we get another “upgrade your ship” menu.

What If Strategy Was Rooted in Reality?

I once prototyped a version of our pirate game where players had to manage crew morale based on food quality and navigation accuracy across Atlantic storms. It wasn’t fun at first—but when we added historical weather data and real-life mutiny probabilities? Suddenly it felt weighty. Players started arguing over decisions like actual captains would.

That’s the power of authenticity—not as decoration, but as system design.

And yes—that’s where things like game artistry come in. When mechanics reflect culture instead of exploiting it for aesthetics alone, you don’t just entertain—you educate subtly.

The Risk of Cultural Commodification

Here’s my pet peeve: every year we see another ‘pirate festival’ event with themed cosmetics—but no deeper narrative connection to real-world seafaring traditions from West Africa or Indigenous Pacific communities.

Why do we keep mining European stereotypes while ignoring others?

It’s not diversity for diversity’s sake—it’s about truth. And truth can be thrilling when told right.

So What Should We Do Instead?

  1. Design around constraints, not convenience (e.g., limited supplies force smarter decisions).
  2. Integrate lore into gameplay loops, not just cutscenes (e.g., reading old letters unlocks new quests).
  3. Let failure matter—lose your ship? Maybe you end up marooned with only your wits.
  4. Use historical accuracy as inspiration—not rules—but let players feel consequences beyond XP gains.
  5. And yes… give those pirates some emotional depth beyond “arrrr!”

In short: stop treating piracy as an aesthetic theme; treat it as a story worth telling—with stakes that go beyond loot drops.

This isn’t about being ‘serious’—it’s about being meaningful.

Honestly, I’ve played so many pirate games I now dream in loot crates. 🏴‍☠️ But let’s be real—why do they all feel like ‘upgrade your ship’ bingo? We’re missing the soul! Real pirates had crews to manage, storms to survive, and emotional baggage.

As someone who studies player psychology (and also reads tarot for fun), I’m here to say: make it meaningful—not just shiny.

So… which pirate game made you actually feel like Captain Crunch? Drop your fave below 👇
